Virtuosi Racing are pleased to announce Michael Shin for the 2022 FIA British Formula 4 season. The South Korean racer teams up with the already confirmed Edward Pearson to complete Virtuosi Racing’s first-ever F4 line-up.
The 17-year-old racer – who has previously tested Formula Renault 2.0 and first-generation F4 cars – will be heading into his first full year in single-seaters.
The South Korean got his first taste of Tatuus T-421 machinery in the 2022 Formula 4 United Arab Emirates Championship, which took place between five rounds in January and February.
Testing has already begun for Shin and Pearson and they will return to the track with Virtuosi at Snetterton this Friday.
On his step up with Virtuosi, Michael Shin said: “I’m delighted to be joining Virtuosi Racing for the 2022 Rokit British Formula 4 season. They are such a high-level team, and I find it so valuable to be able to learn and develop in that proper environment from early on in my career.
“We have made so much progress in the few days we have done so far, and I am excited to keep the improvement going for the rest of the year.”
Shin will be hoping to learn a lot from Virtuosi Racing, whose FIA Formula 2 team have finished as vice-champions in each of the last three seasons. The F2 championship challengers’ decision to expand into F4 followed British motorsport governing body Motorsport UK’s takeover of the entry-level category.
With the launch of a new car levelling the playing field, Virtuosi identified this as the ideal opportunity to enter the category on even ground with the existing teams and fight for the title, using the same methodology that has proven so successful in F2.
Virtuosi’s F4 team boss Mark Salmon said on the signing: “We are delighted to welcome Michael to Virtuosi Racing. We have started very well in our test programme and I’m looking forward to working with him for the rest of the season.”
Round 1 of the British F4 Championship will be held at Donington Park on April 22-24.
